On average there are 2,756 people homeless in Iowa on any given night, which is about 8.8 homeless folks per 10,000 people. In Woodbury and Dakota counties (Sioux City and South Sioux City) there are 288 homeless people on any given night, which is 23.4 homeless people per 10,000 – nearly THREE TIMES the statewide average.
The National Alliance to End Homelessness states that there are 564,708 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the US. Over six percent are children, over eight percent are veterans, and nearly half are disabled and unable to work.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, three states and 61 communities have ended military veteran homelessness.
